Siemens AG, Europe’s largest engineering company, will add at least 2,000 jobs at its renewable-energy division this year, as the business expands to meet rising demand for clean energy.
Siemens has invested “hundreds of millions” of euros in wind energy since it entered the industry with an acquisition in 2004, Rene Umlauft, chief executive officer of the unit, said in a telephone interview yesterday. Hutchinson’s Siemens Wind Energy plant has been awarded an order from Minnesota Power for 35 more 3-megawatt direct drive wind turbines for its Bison 2 wind energy center in central North Dakota.
The Bison 2 wind farm will have 105 MW of installed capacity, to come online in late 2012. The project represents an investment of about $157 million. Deliveries of the wind turbines will commence in August 2012, according to a report in Wind Power Monthly.

In another direct-drive technology announcement, Siemens introduced a new 2.3MW gearless wind turbine that utilizes a compact permanent-magnet generator to maximize power production at project sites with low to moderate wind speeds. The SWT-2.3-113, the second generation of the company’s gearless machines, also features Siemens B55 Quantum rotor blades, intended to augment efficiency and performance with a more lightweight and sound-reducing design.
